The only thing I know for certain about the Tholians, is that they come in three shapes. Floating crystals, spider-like beings, and a variety that look like tripods.

Tholians are also very territorial and extremely anal about precsion and punctuality.

where did you read this? I've never read or heard about that. I don't think that this is canon. But I love the Idea.

At a Trek convention. Some writers said that was one of the ideas that was never used for DS9. It is still considered canon by the owners and writers. The idea was to show some aspects of the Tholians while still keeping them mysterious. In some of the older Star Trek Guide books about the planets and alien races you can clearly read that the Tholians come in the three forms I described.

It was my understanding that the tholians didn't have a written language, them using audio for their storage media.

The krell were a long extinct but intensely technological race featured in the movie.
